Total market potential of EMD rises to Euro 123.4 billion
As of 01 January 2007 the Norwegian
trading group NorgesGruppen joins EMD (European Marketing
Distribution) as its 13th full member. After the
Spanish EMD member EUROMADI took the first steps towards
tapping into the Portuguese market with the foundation of “EUROPORT“,
EMD is now also represented in Norway and thus with strong
members in all of Western Europe’s markets. Following the
unanimous formal resolution within the framework of the EMD
Shareholder’s Meeting on 10 November 2006 in Marbella to
accept NorgesGruppen as a member, the relevant committees in
NorgesGruppen gave their consent to joining EMD on 7
December 2006. NorgesGruppen is by far the market leader in
the Norwegian retail trade. Around 85% of turnover,
amounting most recently to Euro 3.83 billion (31.5 billion
Norwegian Krone), is achieved in the food sector.
“With the accession of NorgesGruppen, the
last blank space on the EMD map of Western Europe has been
filled. EMD is now represented in 22 countries and is now,
to an even greater extent than before, the Number 1
purchasing and marketing organisation in Europe,” declared
Dr. Peter Hampl, delegate of the Board of Directors of EMD
AG.
Dominant market leader in the
Norwegian retail trade with international orientation
Founded in 1994, NorgesGruppen ASA has a
market share of 36.7% in the Norwegian food retail sector
and, with 1,900 shops, 813 kiosks and a total of 25,000
employees, is by far the largest retail trading company in
Norway. Its presence in Norway includes the three chains
KIWI, SPAR and MENY as well as the JOKER outlets and the
ULTRA department stores. The group’s activities also include
food wholesaling as well as related services such as
catering.
In 2005 operative profits amounted to 912
million Norwegian Krone (just under Euro 111 million). The
company is owned by around 1,300 private and institutional
owners. The new partnership with EMD means that the company
will have direct access to the European and international
procurement market and will form the basis for the further
development of its leading position.
NorgesGruppen has been involved on the
international level for over 40 years and forms, along with
the EMD members Axfood (Sweden), Tuko Logistics (Finland)
and SuperGros (Denmark), “United Nordic”. Collaboration
within the framework of this alliance includes imports,
joint purchasing of mass-market products and cooperation in
own brands. Ownership of “United Nordic” is divided evenly
over the four members. The group bundles a market volume of
approximately Euro 13 billion, amounting to 25% of the total
Scandinavian food market. The accession of NorgesGruppen to
EMD will lead to important synergies with the international
trading area of EMD which will become effective more or less
immediately.
Norway: Strong growth in the food
sector
The total market volume of the food
retailing trade in Norway in 2005 amounted to around Euro
12.8 billion and has seen growth of 50% in the decade since
1995. In the same period the market share of NorgesGruppen
rose from 28% to 36.7%. Of the countries in Europe, Norway
has the highest gross domestic product per capita and is in
second place in terms of the purchasing power of the
population, i.e. 42% above the European average.
EMD market share in Europe 12.9%
Following the accession of NorgesGruppen,
EMD has a sales potential of Euro 123.4 billion and a market
share of 12.9%. More than 1,100 member companies from the
independent food retailing trade are working in 22 European
countries with around 53,000 outlets in food retailing and
around 41,000 convenience shops, kiosks and filling
stations. All together they have selling space of app. 30
million m2. The range of companies directly or
indirectly associated with EMD extends from international
food retailing groups to national or regional supermarket
chains right up to the independent trader in his “Shop
around the corner”.
EMD AG is now represented in all the
major European markets with blanket coverage in Western
Europe. Through its members it is present in all of the
markets of Western Europe and, in addition to this, in the
Czech Republic, Slovakia, Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, Croatia
and Hungary. EMD is thus the only European alliance for the
independent, medium-sized retail trade.
