New supply contracts in areas such as frozen and dairy
products, tissues and beverages
As the leading
associated group of independent trading companies in Europe,
EMD has been using the PLMA (Private Label Manufacturers
Association) specialized trade fair for several years now to
negotiate comprehensive new supply contracts or renegotiate
existing ones. This year too, negotiations of this kind were
the focus of what is now the 4th EMD Purchaser
Forum the day before the fair, which begins today in
Amsterdam.
Over 100
purchasers from 14 countries hold joint negotiations
More than 100
purchasers from EMD member companies in 14 countries
participated in the forum. The interest of the suppliers to
present their products and services to a high-ranking group of
decision-makers and create the impetus for new supply
agreements was appropriately high on the other side.
Negotiations
started for a supply volume of 300 million euros
In this way, a
total supply volume of roughly 300 million euros was
negotiated in several product-specific work groups. The EMD
members made a joint approach here, after it had already been
determined in internal coordination discussions which members
wanted to be involved in which product groups with which
quantities.
The negotiations
in Amsterdam involved new contracts on the one hand, in such
areas as frozen products (French fries) and dairy produce
(mozzarella, spray cream) with a value of around € 30 million.
On the other hand, joint discussions were held with suppliers
on currently running projects in the fresh food and tissue
areas. In future, procurement for these two areas with a total
value of more than € 200 m will be consolidated and operate on
a pan-European level. In addition to this, the EMD members
again decided to jointly procure beverages with a value of 65
million euros in 2008. This involves concrete supply
agreements for juices, ice tea and beer. Additional
resolutions were reached on the consolidated purchase of
products such as soft drinks and sweets.
Consolidation
– EMD’s strategic lever
By conducting
joint purchasing negotiations, EMD has again strengthened the
cooperation between its members, who come from 19 different
European countries. This joint approach also strengthens the
position of independent traders in Europe.
As the
continent’s largest purchasing group, EMD has a special
responsibility towards its members, as well as for local
deliveries in practically all relevant European markets. For
this reason, in addition to conducting the purchasing
negotiations, EMD also used the meeting to discuss the
strategies with which the trading companies can react to the
rapidly changing market situation. The most important
challenges – the unstable situation in the raw materials
markets and the securing of supplies – will have to be
overcome jointly by the EMD members to an even greater extent
than today.
