Step-by-step handover of office in 2009
Dr. Peter Hampl, head of EMD for 18
years, 6 of which were spent as the Delegate of the Board of
Directors, is due to retire at the end of 2009. His
designated successor is Philippe Gruyters (45), who will
take over as Managing Director of EMD on 1 March 2009. The
handover of this top position also means that a new
generation will be at the head of the company.
Because it was very important for EMD to
ensure a smooth transition, the search for a successor was
planned on a long-term basis within the scope of an
international recruiting process. The handover process will
now begin in the best spirit of mutual consent and it will
be structured jointly to ensure a seamless takeover of the
extensive portfolio of duties.
Dr. Hampl will withdraw from EMD in the
course of the year and will also formally relinquish his
position as Delegate of the Board of Directors.
Philippe Gruyters is a Belgian citizen
who has managed the Dutch holding of European trading giant
Aldi since 2001. He joined Aldi in 1993, working first as an
assistant to the Board of Directors of Aldi Einkaufs GmbH &
CoKG in Germany, then as Managing Director of Aldi Roeselare
NV. He held the same position with Aldi Erpe-Mere NV in
Belgium before moving to the Netherlands. Gruyters is a
graduate of the Solvay Business School of the University of
Brussels, where he gained a degree as a Commercial Engineer.
In addition to his native language, Dutch, he also speaks
English, French, German and Spanish.
